walks and walking in the lake district
I think to put the walks and walking on the site into perspective it is important to firstly give an over view of ourselves. One neither needs to be a mountaineer or a fell walker to enjoy the delights of many of the walks and they can be achieved by anyone having a reasonable level of fitness.
My wife and I did not take up walking as an enjoyable past time until we were in our mid fifties. Our exercise previously was mostly confined to that which most people would carry out in the normal course of their working day,my wife running her bridal wear business, which takes a far lot more effort than many would believe, and myself as a professional photographer in my own business mainly dealing with portrait and weddings photography. It was at my wife's insistence that we visited the lake district and is was soon apparent that the only way to get the full enjoyment of the sheer rugged beauty of the area was to get out of the car and walk.
Hence our walks started in the lake district
Many who visit the lake district visit the usual more popular places such as Windermere,Ambleside,Grasmere and Keswick, all very attractive towns in their own right and all surrounded by a wealth of beauty unsurpassed,in my opinion, any where else in the England. But once beyond the boundaries of these towns lies a magical world of mountains and valleys, wild open fells, cascading waterfalls, glorious tarns, hidden ghylls and a world of peace and tranquillity which changes with the seasons and changes by the hours as the weather continually varies with light, shade, sun and cloud.
WALKING TIMES
It is a good estimate to consider that your walking pace will be about 2 miles per hour. This does not take into account any stops to talk to other walkers or for breaks for snacks or taking photographs. You may well take longer on steep lengthy accents. When we first started walking for pleasure we tried and succeeded in doing the walks in the estimated time but our attitudes changed as we realised that there was just too much to see and appreciate as well as photograph on many of the walks.
For several reasons we also like to start the walks at a reasonable time in the morning.Firstly one of the draw backs on the lake district is that parking spaces are limited in many places. So the earlier we get there the better.Secondly we like to spend time on photography and enjoying the views.
THE WEATHER
Be very - very aware that the weather in the north of England can and does change very quickly.Check weather forecasts before you set out.If you have internet access then check out the BBC weather site at http://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/ukweather
Never assume that just because the weather is fine and still in the valleys that it will be the same on higher ground. If the weather should turn imclament during a walk then call it off.
As well as the poor weather considerqtion the sun can
