Tarn Hows - Lake District

tarnhows walk
Nestling between the beautiful village's of Hawkshead and Coniston,Tarn Hows is located off of a minor road on Hawkshead Hill. The tarn is not a natural work of nature but was originally three smaller tarns called Monk Coniston Tarns.James Marshall of Monk Coniston farm dammed the outflow in the 1850s to form a larger tarn to provide power to the local saw mill in Yewdale, the outflow from the tarn tumbling through the surrounding woodland down a course known as Tom Gill.
The Tarns as it is also known and its setting came up for sale in 1929 and were bought by Mrs William Heelis, far better known to the world over as Beatrix Potter, who sold half to the National Trust for what it cost to buy. and bequeathed the rest of the estate to the Trust in her will.
It is said that this is one of the most popular and most visited places in the lake District and in 1974 a survey estimated that 750,000 visited the tarn.It also estimated that only about 10% actually walk around the tarn.
This is somewhat surprising as the walk of about 1 1/2 miles around the tarn is probably one of the easiest walks in the lakes, suitable for children and with a well defined footpath that is even suitable for wheelchairs, although the companion will have a few uphill pushes during the course of the walk. There is a large grassed area at the top of the tarn which many use as a picnic area and from which the visiting artistes will spend a leisurely day painting the wonderful views. There are two car parks above the tarn, one solely for the use of disabled but if you visit the area then arrive early as the car parks fill quickly although many seem to just view the area and move on in a short space of time.

Like much of the lake district the area of Tarn Hows are very picturesque at all times of the year and a second and third visit are well worth considering as the seasons change and never on two visits will the area look the same.Even if you do not walk around the tarn a short stroll will offer outstanding views towards Wetherlam, the Helvellyn range and the Langdale Pikes.Surrounded by woodland and open fell there are many walks in all directions from Tarn Hows and for those seeking a more leisurely pursuit the nearby village of Hawkshead has the attraction of a number of welcoming hostelries as well as the inevitable outlet shops.
