Tarn Lake Distrcit - Cumbria |

|
With any mention of the English lakes or the lake district it is often the more commercialised areas of Windermere,Coniston,or Ullswater that are foremost in brochures but it is the little gems away from the general tourist route which hold the magic of the area and wait peacefully to be discovered. One such location is Finsthwaite Tarn located just to the east of the southern end of lake Windermere.Said by some to be on par with Tarn Hows this magical lesser know tarn consists of High Dam and Low Dam and offers a leisurely walk of about two hours. |

Finsthwaite TarnHigh Dam - Low DamOak and birch are the dominant species of trees in the area with conifers planted later.Roe deer - Red deer and Red Squirrels frequent the woodland of the area. From the local woods wooden bobbins were made and supplied the cotton mills of Lancashire in vast quantities during the 19th century and the water from High Dam provided the water power to drive the machinery at Stott Park Bobbin Mill in the nearby village of Finsthwaite which is now the only mill with its machinery in working order. At High Dam car park there is a large bobbin with the inscription around the edge - "This is the water that turns the wheel, that spins the lathe, that shapes the wood, to make the bobbin, to wind the thread, that wove the wealth of Lancashire. These are the trees, that cut by man, will sprout again, feed Stott Mill, to make the bobbins to earn the pay, that fed the folk of Finsthwaite" which for those of us old enough to remember sounds very familiar to a song once sung by the Lancashire lass Gracie Fields. |
